Physical Education

Physical Education (PE) engages and energises students. It provides authentic contexts in which to learn and challenges students to develop physical and interpersonal skills. Students will experience movement and understand the role that it plays in sport and life. They will improve their knowledge, performance and understanding through a variety of activities, including football, rugby, badminton, basketball, volleyball, health-related fitness, cricket, gymnastics, crossfit and athletics. The skills taught in lessons will sharpen their understanding of strategy and tactics and help them to transfer knowledge from one context to another, including sport, recreational and outdoor activities. The concept of challenge by choice enables appropriate learning at each pupil’s level, building confidence.

We will study the importance of teamwork and the need to communicate with teammates constructively and positively, supporting and encouraging them so that everybody performs to their potential. PE provides a range of opportunities for students to challenge and extend themselves in an environment of managed risk. Pupils step outside their comfort zone to take on new social, physical and emotional challenges. Taking on challenges and assessing risk requires the exploration and development of decision-making skills.

When pupils leave school, there will not be PE teachers to organise sports activities and help them to keep fit. One of the main aims of the Sports Department is to prepare pupils for life after school and teach them how to train independently to maintain or improve their fitness and health. We aim to promote an interest in lifelong leisure and recreational pursuits to encourage continued participation in physical activity. Students will also learn how to analyse performance and develop the ability to observe, assess and suggest improvements to areas of weakness while recognising the strengths of each individual performer. PE is a very enjoyable, challenging and important subject that develops physical fitness, psychological wellbeing and leadership qualities. It is a subject that equips pupils with the knowledge to live longer, happier and healthier lives.
