English as Additional Language (EAL)
English as an Additional Language (EAL) at The British School of Brasilia is a mandatory programme for non-native English speakers in both Primary and Secondary phases who, following an initial assessment by the school, are identified as not yet having the level of English required to fully access the curriculum. The programme is designed to ensure that all pupils are able to engage meaningfully with the British curriculum and to progress academically with confidence.
The EAL programme provides structured and targeted language support, focusing on the development of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in English. Instruction is aligned with the academic demands of the English National Curriculum (ENC), enabling pupils to build the language competence necessary to participate effectively in lessons across all subject areas. Language development is approached as an integral part of the learning process, rather than as a standalone activity.
Pupils receive support that is appropriate to their age, stage and individual linguistic needs, with clear objectives linked to academic language use in the classroom. This approach ensures that language acquisition directly supports curriculum access and academic progression.
The EAL programme reflects the school’s commitment to academic integrity and educational inclusion. By providing structured English language support at the point of need, The British School of Brasilia ensures that non-native English speakers are equipped with the linguistic tools required to succeed within an English learning environment, while maintaining high academic standards across all phases of the school.
